The West Fork Gators freshman green team opened the 2026 football season in impressive fashion Thursday night, earning a 20-6 victory over the Alief Elsik Rams.

The Gators came out ready to make an early statement, putting together a balanced offensive performance that produced three touchdowns while the defense consistently made life difficult for the Rams.

Rashard Witherspoon led the way through the air, throwing two touchdown passes during the contest. The first came on a connection with Jacoby Sherman, giving the Gators an early spark. Rashard Witherspoon later found Andrew Ontiveros for another touchdown, helping West Fork build its advantage and maintain control of the game.

Kyrique Lawrence also made his mark in the season opener, connecting with Jaden Callier for the Gators' third touchdown of the night. The scoring plays from multiple quarterback-receiver combinations highlighted the offensive playmaking ability West Fork will look to carry throughout the season.

But the Gators' success wasn't limited to the offensive side of the ball. The West Fork defensive line played a major role in the victory, setting the tone up front and repeatedly disrupting the Rams' offense. As a unit, the defensive line recorded multiple tackles for loss throughout the game, consistently getting into the backfield and forcing Alief Elsik out of their comfort zone.

The pressure from the defensive front helped keep the Rams from establishing a consistent offensive rhythm. This would also allow the Gators' linebackers and secondary units to swarm and make big tackles and key pass breakups throughout the game.

That effort ultimately helped the Gators hold Alief Elsik to just six points. The defensive line's ability to win at the point of attack gave the rest of the defense opportunities to make plays and helped West Fork maintain control as the game progressed.

With the victory, West Fork opens the 2026 season 1-0, giving the team plenty of momentum heading into its next matchup with Huffman.

The Gators will return home next week looking to go 1-0 for the second straight week. The West Fork freshman green team will be back at Gator Field to host Huffman on Wednesday, September 2, at 6 p.m.

The 2026 season is officially underway, and the West Fork Gators are off to a hot start.
