WEST FORK BATTLES BUT FALLS TO CLEAR LAKE, 31-21

Gators repeatedly answer Clear Lake but suffer first loss of the season

The West Fork Gators battled throughout Thursday night’s matchup against Clear Lake, but several costly plays proved difficult to overcome as the Gators suffered their first loss of the 2026 season, 31-21.

West Fork fell behind early and spent much of the night playing from behind, but the Gators continued to respond. Three times, West Fork answered a Clear Lake score with a touchdown of its own, but the Falcons were ultimately able to create separation late.

The loss moves West Fork to 2-1 on the season following victories over Alief Elsik and Huffman Hargrave to open the year.

SALAS CREATES EARLY TAKEAWAY

Clear Lake struck first, scoring a touchdown in the opening quarter to take a 7-0 advantage.

West Fork’s defense responded with one of its biggest plays of the night.

Jayden Salas forced a fumble and recovered it himself, creating an early takeaway and giving the football back to the Gator offense.

West Fork was unable to turn the opportunity into points, however, and Clear Lake carried its 7-0 advantage into the second quarter.

GATORS ANSWER BEFORE HALFTIME

Clear Lake extended its lead to 14-0 in the second quarter, putting West Fork in its largest deficit of the first half.

The Gators responded through the air.

Quarterback Tyler Gilliam connected with Kaden Ferguson for a 36-yard touchdown, cutting the Clear Lake advantage in half and sending West Fork into the locker room trailing 14-7.

Gilliam finished the night completing 15 of 29 passes for 152 yards and two touchdowns. Ferguson caught three passes for 41 yards, with his 36-yard touchdown providing West Fork’s first points of the game.

BIG PLAYS SHAPE THIRD QUARTER

West Fork entered the second half within one possession, but Clear Lake quickly created separation with one of the game’s biggest momentum-changing plays.

The Falcons intercepted a West Fork pass and returned it for a touchdown, extending their advantage to 21-7.

Clear Lake’s special teams later came up with another major play by blocking a West Fork field-goal attempt.

Still, the Gators refused to go away.

Gilliam found JJ Martinez for a 19-yard touchdown reception, pulling West Fork back within seven at 21-14 entering the fourth quarter.

The score marked Gilliam’s second touchdown pass of the night and once again put the Gators within striking distance despite the setbacks.

SIMMONS PROVIDES FOURTH-QUARTER SPARK

Clear Lake opened the fourth-quarter scoring with another touchdown, stretching its lead to 28-14.

West Fork answered again.

Kaden Simmons broke through for a 48-yard touchdown run, cutting the deficit to 28-21 and giving the Gators another opportunity to make a late push.

Simmons provided West Fork’s biggest threat on the ground throughout the night, carrying the ball 10 times for 95 yards and a touchdown. He averaged 9.5 yards per carry.

Clear Lake eventually added a 38-yard field goal to extend the lead to 31-21, accounting for the final points of the night.

West Fork finished with 286 yards of total offense, including 152 through the air and 134 on the ground. Ronald Stagger led the receiving corps with five catches for 61 yards.

DEFENSE PRODUCES DESPITE LOSS

The final score did not tell the entire story of West Fork’s defensive performance.

The Gators received significant production throughout the lineup, led by Gary Pearce, who finished with 15 total tackles, including six solo stops, while recording three tackles for loss.

Nathan Estrada was close behind with 14 total tackles, including eight solo stops, and added a tackle for loss.

Jordan Vaughn finished with 13 total tackles, while Jayden Whitelow recorded 12 tackles, including eight solo stops. Whitelow also broke up a pass in the secondary.

Salas’ impact went beyond his eight total tackles and tackle for loss. His first-quarter forced fumble and recovery produced a takeaway for West Fork and stopped an early Clear Lake possession.

Orien Redus added eight total tackles and a tackle for loss, while Elijah Smith recorded four tackles and two tackles for loss.

Even with Clear Lake finding the end zone four times, West Fork’s defense continued to make plays behind the line of scrimmage and received several double-digit tackling performances.

GATORS TURN ATTENTION TO DISTRICT PLAY

West Fork faced adversity throughout the night.

The Gators fell behind 14-0, surrendered a defensive touchdown on an interception return and had a field-goal attempt blocked. Each time Clear Lake appeared ready to take complete control, however, West Fork found a way to respond.

Ferguson’s 36-yard touchdown made it 14-7. Martinez’s 19-yard touchdown made it 21-14. Simmons’ 48-yard touchdown run made it 28-21.

Ultimately, Clear Lake’s ability to capitalize on several pivotal plays proved to be the difference.

After beginning the season with consecutive victories, West Fork leaves non-district play with a 2-1 record and now turns its attention to the games that will help determine its postseason path.

The Gators will open district play against the Kingwood Park Panthers, who enter the matchup with a 1-2 record.

West Fork and Kingwood Park will meet Thursday, Sept. 24 at Turner Stadium, giving the Gators an opportunity to put the Clear Lake loss behind them and begin district competition with a fresh start.

For West Fork, the first three games provided three very different tests. Now the focus shifts to district play, where every game takes on added importance in the race for a postseason berth.
